Serving at St. John

ACOLYTES enhance the congregation’s experience of the service by lighting candles, carrying crosses, torches, flags, and banners in the procession, and they may also assist in the preparation of the Eucharist at the altar. While we love to have children who are of 10 years of age as acolytes, people of all ages may be acolytes at St. John.

Anyone interested in this ministry should contact Fr. Munson.

ALTAR GUILD: The St. John the Divine Altar Guild includes a devoted group of women who lovingly prepare the altar for Mass each week. The Altar Guild prepares the fair linens, set up the altar, and assures sufficient supplies are maintained. Members care for the linens, vestments, candles, and utensils used in services of the Eucharist.

Any who are interested in serving the Lord through Altar Guild should contact Susan Morris.

DIVINE STITCHES consist of a group of loving women who share a passion of sewing.  The group provide things such as comfort blankets to the Burkburnett Police and Fire Department to have on hand when responding to incidents involving children and to Patsy’s House in Wichita Falls.

Any who are interested in serving the Lord through this sewing ministry should contact Susan Morris.

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS help serve the bread and wine at the Eucharist. They are lay persons, but they have special training and are licensed by the bishop so they can serve consecrated bread and wine at any celebration of the Eucharist.

Any one who is interested in this ministry should contact Fr. Munson.

LAY READERS/LECTORS are congregation members who read the Scripture lessons during services. Lectors prepare carefully to read the lessons in our gathered worship so they can lead others to a deeper understanding of the meaning of the passage.

We encourage all adults who have been confirmed and can demonstrate the ability to read the Word with clear distinction and a strong, reverential voice to contact Fr. Munson.

USHERS, GREETERS & OBLATIONERS  Our ushers and greeters welcome everyone to worship, and make sure the service flows smoothly by distributing bulletins and worship booklets and by helping all people who come to worship feel comfortable.

Our Oblationers are usually one of our families who volunteer to bring forward the bread and wine.

Any one interested in this ministry should contact Fr. Munson.

WORSHIP LEADERS are also congregation members with special training. They are authorized to lead public worship under the direction of the Clergy. Worship Leaders at St. John also serve as Eucharistic Ministers.

Any one interested in this ministry should contact Fr. Munson.

Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday is the day during Holy Week that commemorates the Washing of the Feet (Maundy) and the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles, as described in the canonical gospels. "Maundy" comes from the Latin word mandatum, or commandment, reflecting Jesus' words "I give you a new commandment."
Maundy Thursday initiates the Paschal Triduum, the period which commemorates the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus; this period includes Good Friday and Holy Saturday, and ends on the evening of Easter Sunday.

    • Stations of the CrossStations of the CrossTime: 6:00 pm
Also known as "way of the cross" or "via crucis" this devotion consists of 14 stations, taken both from Scripture and tradition, since the 18th century when the Church officially approved the now common Lenten practice. Through the stations, we are able to spiritually journey to the via dolorosa (Latin for "way of sorrows" or "way of suffering"). Beginning with Christ's condemnation all the way to his body being laid in the tomb, each "station" allows us to pray and reflect in prayer. Afterwards we meet in the Parish Hall for a Lenten study and meal.
